Parking at Sandhills

Students and staff alike would like to thank our wonderful community for ‘doing their bit’ with regards to our Parking Program over the last few weeks. We appreciate you adhering to the Parking Policy and using our Drive to 5 drop off areas.

In particular, a huge thank you to the Parent Volunteers who have given up their time to enforce our parking policy each and every day come rain or shine. Your efforts have not been fruitless. The safety of our students has increased every day. They are our highest Priority. Our staff has also seen a huge improvement as they find parking so that they may start their shift on time and support our wonderful Extended Day Programs.

A link to our Traffic Safety Booklet (which includes the Drive to 5 areas) is also attached.

Let’s keep up the good work!

Goodbye and Welcome

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Mrs M.J.Seaman as she retires on Friday 31st May. Mrs Seaman has been with Sandhills for 5 years and I am sure you will all join us in celebrating her contribution to Sandhills and dedication to her students and colleagues.

As always, with every goodbye comes a ‘Welcome’. Chantel-Marie Stickel joins us on Monday 3rd June 2019 in Class 2/3B. Miss Stickel will be popping in during this week to meet the students to ensure a smooth transition.

All the best for the future Mrs Seaman and ‘Welcome to Sandhills’ Miss Stickel!!

June Pride Month – Flying the pride flag to celebrate diversity and inclusion

The pride flag is a celebration of diversity and a visual reminder that WRDSB welcomes and supports each and every student – regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation.

We believe that our schools are safe spaces for everyone that walks through our doors. Our strategic plan emphasizes that the well-being of all of our students and staff are met through a focus on inclusivity. We have several policies and procedures in place that speak to our commitment to equity and inclusion. Raising the Pride flag demonstrates this commitment to our students, staff, parents, caregivers and community members.

We know that those who identify as LGBTQ+ are at higher risk of experiencing bullying and harassment. Our school board will not tolerate this kind of behaviour. We will continue to create inclusive and safe spaces for anyone who enters any of our schools or buildings.

Did you know?

The WRDSB community believes in Safe Caring Inclusive Schools (SCIS).

We recognize that providing students with an opportunity to learn and develop in a safe, caring and respectful society is a shared responsibility in which the Board and schools play an important role. Schools that have a variety of prevention and intervention strategies foster a positive learning and teaching environment that supports academic achievement for all students and helps students reach their full potential. A positive school climate is a crucial component of prevention. Not having appropriate prevention and intervention strategies adversely affects a school’s ability to educate its students, students’ ability to learn, as well as healthy relationships and the school climate.

“Building a safe, caring and inclusive school culture means teaching it minute by minute, day by day, integrating it into discipline practices and curriculum, using instructional models that provide practice in social and relationship skills and, most importantly, modelling it.” – Vicki Mather

Safe Caring Inclusive Schools WRDSB

Here at Sandhills, we value input from teachers and parents on our SCIS committee. If you’re looking for an opportunity to contribute to an important team next year, please consider joining the fun with the SCIS team. There are 4 formal meetings, and minimal input needed between meetings. We look forward to hearing from you. Together we can make a difference!

Community Nature Walk – Doon Huron Forest Conservation Area

Save the Date!! On May 29th at 6:30pm we will have a Community Nature Walk at the Doon Huron Forest Conservation Area. This event is co-sponsored with our Walking School Bus. It is free and all are welcome. No registration, just show up with your family!

It is with sadness that this week we say Goodbye to Ms. Daria Vela. Ms. Vela has been teaching our Grade One French Immersion class (1FA) since September. On behalf of staff, students, parents and caregivers at Sandhills, we wish Ms. Vela good luck in her new position and future adventures.

Did you know?

At long last the weather is changing, and Spring is here. With the warm weather comes a chance for our students to be back outside enjoying local parks and reuniting with friends and nature.

However, being outside also comes with responsibility, especially in our older grades. Did you know that the Waterloo Region District School Board has provided it’s community of schools with helpful tips to ‘Street Proof’ your child? This includes information regarding strangers and being aware of their environment when they are out with friends or on their own. For more information please click on the link below.

Jump Rope for Heart

Sandhills is a proud supporter of JUMP ROPE FOR HEART and this year’s kick off assembly is tomorrow, Friday, 26th April. Jump Rope for Heart encourages kids to be active and help others by raising funds for life-saving heart and stroke research.

Motivate kids to get active.
Reinforce healthy habits like healthy eating and physical activity.
Teach the importance of social responsibility and helping others in the community and across Canada.
Empower kids to make a difference by supporting a good cause.
Boost school spirit.
This year, our participation day is Friday, May 17th. Mark you calendar! Pledge forms will be going home with your student tomorrow with instructions on how to donate/pledge online.

Keep a look out for more information on school-day and our website. For further information on Jump Rope for Heart please click the following link:

This week we are introducing Intrinsic Motivation at our assembly. What is Intrinsic Motivation you ask?

“A life lived without enthusiasm is a life half lived.”

What gets your child out of bed in the morning? What makes their face light up? What makes them feel alive and connected? These are critical parts of their well-being. Follow your child’s intrinsic motivation and enthusiasm as a trail to their happiest future selves.

To build your child’s intrinsic motivation this week, have a conversation with them! Talk to them about how our brains are like a muscle. For more information click on the link below:

Did You Know?

Washing your hands not only prevents you from getting sick, but it also reduces the risk of infecting others. If you don’t wash your hands properly before coming into contact with others, you can infect them with the germs on your hands. Other people can also get sick from the germs unwashed hands leave on shared objects like doorknobs, keyboards, and other equipment in the home or workplace

We have included two links from the Caring for Kids website and an information sheet from Canada’s Public Health that give helpful tips and further information on the importance of handwashing as we come into the Winter Season.

Bullying Prevention Week

Here at Sandhills Public School and throughout the Waterloo District School Board community, we are committed to providing a safe, caring and inclusive learning environment for all students – each and every one.

Ontario’s Bullying Awareness & Prevention Week runs from November 18 to 24, 2018.

The week is an opportunity for us all, at school and at home, to reinforce clear and positive messages that bullying is not acceptable in our schools and communities.  Many schools have activities and events planned for Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week so stay tuned as you may be hearing a lot about it from your student over the coming weeks.

Did You Know?

November is Gratitude month

As part of the Reconciliation Act, Sandhills acknowledges daily that the land on which we gather is the lands traditionally used by the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe and Neutral people. We do this proudly and as an act of gratitude for what our Indigenous people so kindly share. If we didn’t have the land, where would we have begun?

Swim to Survive for Grade 3 Students

We are looking forward to the start of our Swim to Survive program on 15th November 2018.  Our Grade 3 students will attend Forest Heights Pool each week for 3 weeks to learn the minimum skills needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water.

These are expressed in a skill sequence in the Canadian Swim to Survive standard:

ROLL into deep water
TREAD water for one minute
SWIM 50 metres
A big thank you to Mrs Krupicz for her time and commitment to organize this wonderful and lifesaving program each year.  Don’t forget to bring a towel and a swimsuit!

The Carousel Dance Centre

We are so pleased to announce that the Carousel Dance Centre is returning to Sandhills for another dance performance on Thursday, November 22 from 1:30-2:15pm in the gym. Our JK to Grade 3 classes will enjoy this year’s performance based on the book, The Lorax.

Global issues Photo Booth

A big thank you to all those who participated in the GLOBAL ISSUES PHOTO BOOTH last week as part of our Carnival Celebration.  We are proud to announce that we raised $195 for a Girls’ Orphanage in India.  This wonderful fundraising activity built upon our Global Issues Awareness and the kids had a great time taking part.

THE UMBRELLA PROJECT

As you know, this school year, your child will be participating in The Umbrella Project. The Umbrella Project is a curriculum designed to help your child learn the skills of emotional well being. This year we will be focusing on gratitude, grit, self-compassion, autonomy, mindfulness, resilience, intrinsic motivation, integrity and hope. Please see the attached Welcome Letter for more information on tips/resources and how to sign up for newsletter and facebook updates.

Welcome Letter Umbrella Project Parents

Feeling excluded can be painful and a difficult part of childhood. Gratitude is a useful skill for helping to build and nurture relationships. It can help our children use more inclusive behaviours towards others.

Help your child notice when their peers do something kind for them to boost their gratitude towards others. Point out these moments whenever you can. This will help to guide your children to social behaviours that include instead of exclude.
