Principal’s Update

Sandhills’ Families,

The entire Sandhills staff are excited to be back and to welcome your child to a new school year.

Our custodians, Mr. McVeigh, Ms. Freemantle, Mrs. Racolta and Mr. Hodrea worked through an extremely hot and humid summer to get the school looking orderly and clean to welcome our returning and new Suns.

Ms. Toffolo, Mrs. Reekie and Mrs. Wallace, our office staff, have been instrumental in making sure teachers were prepared to meet their students on Tuesday despite reorganizing classes multiple times.

Teachers have spent many hours preparing classes, activities and lessons to greet students and ensure the learning environment is conducive to each child’s success.  Our Kindergarten teachers and Early Childhood Educators (ECE) worked especially hard to prepare their classes as they all moved to a different physical location.

As the principal of Sandhills, I couldn’t be more proud of all of the staff in their daily efforts to ensure that each and every child is successful socially, academically and cognitively. Sometimes I think we forget to acknowledge the contributions of all the people in the building who contribute to our students’ education.  I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank every adult in the building for their contribution, no matter how small, and let them know how much it is appreciated and recognized.

We have many new staff to welcome to our school:

Mr. Kittmer, Ms. Rank, Miss Vela, Mr. Potochniak, Ms. Freemantle, Mrs. Shaw, Miss Ko, Ms. Guzik, Miss Lammery, Ms. Pink, Mr. Salvatore. We would also like to welcome back Mrs. Bible-Minielly, Miss Best and Mrs. Butcher.

Thank you to the many families who were able to attend our Open House.  It is so nice to see parents and educators able to connect.  If at any time, you have questions about your child’s progress please don’t hesitate to reach out to any of their educators, Mr. Ernst, our Vice Principal or myself.  We are all dedicated to the success of your child and we understand the importance of a strong home-school relationship.  We are all just a phone call or email away.

Finally, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all of you for your consistent and open support in creating a community that works together for our most precious gifts ~ your children.

Proud Principal,

Mrs. Nancy Murovec

  1. Walking School Bus

We are happy to announce that the Walking School Bus will be adding another route. Beginning, Oct 3, 2018, International Walk to School Day, we will launch our “south” route.  The bus will run (walk) every morning.  The bus will start at Bankside and WestForest at 8:10am and travel up West Forest to the school with stops at all cross streets. Please consider having your child join us.  An online application link to sign your child up will be posted shortly.

In the meantime we are looking for Walking School Bus Leaders. If you or someone you know, are able to walk with a group of students 1-5 mornings per week please let us know by contacting Colleen Cooper, Walking School Bus coordinator at colleen.coopwa@ontatio.cancer.ca.

LET THE FUN BEGIN!!

  1.  Parking Lot and Student Travel Safety

In the spring your family received an information pamphlet that outlines our travel safety programs here at Sandhills. The pamphlet outlines many ways for students to get to school in a safe healthy fashion.  We highly encourage all students to walk to school.  We also encourage students and parent volunteers to get involved with our Walking School Bus, or Trailblazers programs.

If you choose to or must drive your child to school we have provided a map in the pamphlet and have posted the map at the school to several “Drive To 5” locations, where it would only be a 5 minute walk to school from that spot. This builds habits and stamina for children to be walking in all weather conditions, and keeps dangerous traffic congestion away from the school.  We have also provided a link to this pamphlet in this this edition of ‘What’s the Scoop’.

Thank you for all you’ve already done to contribute to a safe parking lot and to decrease vehicle congestion that is dangerous for kids. We recognize that it’s not always easy to make these changes, but as a community we must remain committed to ensuring that we never experience the types of tragedies that have impacted lives in communities not far from here.

Just a reminder to leave enough time to walk. Students should be at school by 8:25am as classes begin promptly at 8:35am. Teacher supervision on the back tarmac begins at 8:20am

  1. Fresh from the Farm

Students will have received a Student Order Form on the first day of school for Fresh from the Farm.

Fresh from the Farm was designed to provide a healthy fundraising alternative to schools by selling Ontario-grown fruit and vegetables.

  • Families enjoy fresh, Ontario-grown fruit and vegetables
  • Fresh from the Farm promotes a healthy school environment while providing an opportunity for students to raise money for school initiatives
  • Provides opportunities for students to learn about agri-food and healthy eating
  • Supports Ontario farmers and our local economy

Bundles available are:

Bundle A – $14

  • 5lb of white potatoes
  • 3lb of sweet potatoes
  • 3lb of yellow onions
  • 3lb of carrots

Bundle B – $15

  • 8lb of Empire Apples

Please send your order form together with the cash payment with your student (please note the school does not accept cheques).  Teachers will collect all orders and funds and the school will submit an online total order by Monday, 15 October.  Deliveries take place November through to mid-December. On the delivery day, volunteers receive product and package vegetables (Bundle A) into Fresh from the Farm bags.  Apples (Bundle B) arrive pre-packaged in a poly bag or box.

We appreciate your support – helping our students fundraise in a healthier way!
