  1. Volunteer Billet Families Needed

From September 26-30, Sir John A MacDonald Secondary School is welcoming more than 1,000 Canadian Student Leadership Conference (CSLC) participants to their school. Over the course of the week, CSLC participants will engage in activities and events around the topic of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Billeting is an integral component of the CSLC experience. Through this, conference participants are hosted by local families. This youth exchange provides an encouraging environment for participants to step outside their comfort zones and learn more about the local community.

WRDSB and the CSLC are still in need of local billet families.

All billet families would agree to host a minimum of two (2) CSLC participants for the course of the event.

As a billet family, you are committing to providing:

  • breakfast each morning
  • transportation to and from the conference each day
  • dinner and activities with your students for one special evening with billets
  • a bed/air mattress for each student, and sufficient personal privacy
  • a criminal record check (free of charge) for all residents 18 years and older

To register as a billet family, please contact: billeting@studentleadership.ca.

  1. Stong Start Volunteers Needed!

Letters, Sounds and Words™ is a 10-week program that targets children in Senior Kindergarten and Grade 1 who need a literacy boost. They are paired with trained community volunteers who go into schools to work one to one with them, playing carefully designed games and activities. The Letters, Sounds and Words program is unique as it was designed to be easily implemented by volunteers in schools, including those with little to no previous experience working with children.  If you are interested in volunteering for the Strong Start Program at Sandhills please contact Mrs. Churchill (andrea_churchill@wrdsb.ca) or Mrs. Bible (jeannette_bible@wrdsb.ca).

  1. Parking Lot Attendant Needed

We are looking to hire a parking lot attendant for a 30 minute shift in the morning and in the afternoon.  This is a paid position.  The morning shift would be from 8:15 am until 8:45 am.  The afternoon shift would be from 2:45 pm until 3:15 pm.  If you are interested in applying for this job, please email nancy_murovec@wrdsb.ca

  1. Walking School Bus News

Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated group of volunteers, we have begun our Sandhills Walking School Bus! The “Bus” currently has two routes and departs both locations at 8:15am.

If you are interested in leading an existing route or expanding our current network of routes, please contact the office.

If you’d like your child to participate on the WSB, there is a student registration form you can pick up at the office complete with a map of our current routes.

The more participation, involvement, and support throughout the community the stronger this exciting and important initiative will grow!

Please consider following our Sandhills WSB Twitter feed @shlwalkingbus for news and updates

  1. New Fundraising Initiative

This year Sandhills School Council is excited to share a new fundraising initiative through LoyaltyFunding, an organization that sells gift cards from a variety of grocery stores, coffee shops, pharmacies, and gas stations, etc – retailers you probably already regularly use, with a portion of the proceeds going directly to Sandhills with no additional cost to you. You can do one time gift card purchases, or monthly subscriptions with no monthly order minimums.

You can learn more and order through their website https://www.loyaltyfunding.ca/sandhills There is also an app available wherever you get your apps by searching “LoyaltyFunding.” If you are using your mobile device you can get your gift cards digitally, so you don’t have to worry about misplacing your gift card – you simply scan through your mobile device.

Thank you for your continued support of fundraising efforts to support all students of Sandhills.
