  1. National Day of Mourning

The National Day of Mourning – held annually in Canada on April 28th – is dedicated to remembering the thousands of workers who have been killed, injured, or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents.  It is also to honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies.  Accordingly, flags at the Education Centre and W.R.D.S.B. schools will fly at half-mast on Friday, April 28th, 2017.

  1. Walking School Bus Survey – Your feedback is important!

As you may know, there is a committee working hard to have a Walking School Bus program launched for September! This program is designed to provide a safe, adult volunteer supervised option for more students to take part and enjoy all the benefits of walking to school, every day.

In order to continue with our planning, we need your help. Please follow this link: https://goo.gl/forms/QzufhyOK4v5VdguG2 to contribute to a survey that should take less than 2 minutes to complete.

The more responses we receive, the more effective and successful the Walking School Bus will be. Please respond by the end of day, Tuesday May 2nd.

  1. Are you moving?

We are already busy preparing for next year.  Accurate enrolment information is key to good planning.  If you are moving and your child will no longer attend Sandhills, please send a note to the school office to let us know the final date of expected attendance at Sandhills and the name of the school you will be transferring to.  You will need to register at the school you will be attending.  Registration forms for schools within the W.R.D.S.B. may be picked up in the office.

  1. Safe, Caring and Inclusive School Survey

WRDSB conducts a Safe, Caring and Inclusive School Survey for students, staff and parents/guardians to complete during April and May each year. This year, the survey will be open from April 3 to May 12, 2017.  The survey, which has been conducted on-line for the past 4 years, includes questions about Teaching and Learning, Relationships, Safety, and School Environment.

The purpose of the Safe, Caring and Inclusive School Survey is to:

  • provide information to the Board about the experiences of our students, staff and families,
  • provide information to the Board to assist with decisions to expand programs and/or provide resources to help students from all cultures, faith groups and learning exceptionalities, and
  • ensure that the Board continues to support learning in safe, caring and inclusive environments.

The Parent/Guardian Survey:

The parent/guardian survey is also completed online and should take no more than 30 minutes to complete. The survey is anonymous and you may choose to skip any questions or stop answering the survey at any time. To access the parent/guardian survey please go to the following link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2017SCISParent_GuardianSurvey

You can also access the survey via our school website at www.shl.wrdsb.ca

The results from the student, staff and parent/guardian surveys will be used to produce reports for our schools that will help us plan and/or revise our Safe, Caring and Inclusive School initiatives. WRDSB may also share the anonymous data with research partners from Sir Wilfrid Laurier University who will collaborate with board staff for analysis of the data.  If you and/or your child choose not to participate, this will not affect his/her grades or other school outcomes in any way.

  1. Popcorn and Frozen Yogurt

Each Monday at second break, popcorn and frozen yogurt will be available for sale in the main entry foyer; all proceeds will go to School Council initiatives.  Butter and salt flavoured popcorn will sell for $2.00 per bag.  Chocolate / vanilla swirl low fat frozen yogurt will sell for $4.00 per cup.  Sales will be cash only each Monday while supplies last.

  1. Did you know?

Walking is an environmentally sustainable form of transportation.  Climate change is one of the most pressing issues facing communities, our nation and the international community.  Walking is one easy way to replace a car trip and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Nine families walking to school each day can prevent up to 1000kg of carbon dioxide from being emitted into our neighbourhood.
