June is nationally recognized as pride month in Canada. Many institutions and organizations fly the Pride flag as a celebration of diversity. During the month of June, all Waterloo Region District School Board locations will fly the Pride flag alongside the Canadian flag.

We believe that our schools are safe spaces for everyone that walks through our doors. Our strategic plan emphasises that the well-being for all of our students and staff are met through a focus on inclusivity. We have several policies and procedures in place that speak to our commitment to equity and inclusion. Raising the Pride flag demonstrates this commitment to our students, staff, parents, caregivers and community members.

We know that those who identify as 2SLGBTQI+ are at higher risk for experiencing bullying and harassment. Our school board will not tolerate this kind of behaviour. We will continue to create inclusive and safe spaces for anyone who enters any of our schools or buildings.

This is a time for us to celebrate diversity in our schools and bring awareness to the elimination of prejudice. The Pride flag is a symbol for the 2SLGBTQI+ community. Its colours, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet represent life, healing, sunlight, nature, harmony and spirit. Flying the Pride flag signals that our schools are inclusive spaces for everyone, aligning with our Operational Goal of student and staff well-being. It also aligns with our Strategic Priority that staff are supported in their wellness and students experience a sense of belonging in a caring learning environment that addresses their well-being.
