IN NOVEMBER, WE REMEMBER
The Remembrance Day Ceremony has played a major role in Remembrance since 1931. Every year, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we gather to stand in honour of all who have fallen. Together, we observe a moment of silence to mark the sacrifice of the many who have fallen in the service of their country, and to acknowledge the courage of those who still serve.
In the midst of this global pandemic, how and where we take the time to pause, reflect and commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve their country, will look different.
While the day and events will look different, the essence of Remembrance Day remains the same. Remembrance Day is about commemorating and honouring all Canadians that have served and are serving to protect our country. Too often, the invaluable contributions of diverse groups to the Allied efforts go ignored in historical records and in commentary outside of their home nations.
Some of our students and staff here at the WRDSB have experienced war first hand. It is important for all of our students to understand that Remembrance Day is not just about remembering the past, but also those Canadians who continue to serve today.
Please note, we have altered the flow of our school day slightly. Period 4 and the first Nutrition Break will be switched so that we can observe a moment of silence at 11:00am.
*** Nutrition Break will take place from 10:05-10:45am
*** Period 4 and our virtual assembly will take place from 10:45-11:15am
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
The Sandhills School Council has an Ontario Gaming Licence and has a monthly Friday night commitment from 9pm to midnight at the K-W Gaming Centre running the BINGO. Regular members of School Council and some of our Sandhills staff members have been volunteering for these spots since June 2019. These efforts have raised a lot of money to be put back into whole school activities, events and guests for our school.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BINGO will be the only school fundraiser this year. Sandhills School Council needs your help as we look for more Volunteers to help out at our Friday BINGO nights.
Without volunteers to help run the BINGO nights we risk losing our Gaming licence and therefore losing a significant amount of money for our students.
If you are interested in volunteering to help out and would like more information, please contact the school. We appreciate your support!
NOVEMBER IS KINDNESS MONTH
This month our focus shifts to KINDNESS as we work on showing KINDNESS to ourselves so we are better able to show KINDNESS to others. Every day can be a random act of kindness day! Kindness is an easy skill to understand and make a part of our daily lives.
Doing good is not only beneficial for the person on the receiving end and those who witness the kind action, but also for the givers of kindness. When we are kind and intentionally perform acts of kindness, we get a boost in our own wellbeing and happiness. It feels good to help others and it helps us focus on the positive things in our lives. It’s win-win!
