  1. Message from the W.R.D.S.B.

The month of June is pride month. Beginning today and for the remainder of the month, the Education Centre and all W.R.D.S.B. schools will raise the Pride flag.  Many of our students, parents/guardians and community members identify as members of the Rainbow (or LGBTQ+) community. Flying the Pride flag not only signals that our schools are safe spaces for everyone, it also aligns with our Operational Goal of student and staff well-being and our new Strategic Priority that staff are supported in their wellness and students experience a sense of belonging in a caring learning environment that addresses their well-being.

  1. Library Books

The final day for library circulation will be June 15th with most books being returned during each class’s final library period June 12th to 16th.  All books signed out by students MUST be returned by Zero Day which is Friday, June 23rd.

  1. School Council Updates

The Trivia Trail event is scheduled June 21st at 6:30pm.  Come explore the neighbourhood and complete the trivia challenges.

The Sandhills Council is excited to announce that they were the successful applicants for a grant from The Grand River Rotary Club for $1500!  These funds will be used to complete the buddy bench project.

  1. Walking School Bus Update

The School Travel Planning Committee is excited to announce that plans are moving forward for launching the Sandhills Walking School Bus in September 2017!  A Walking School Bus is a program where a group of children walk to school with one or more adults.  The group follows a structured route with meeting points and a timetable.  If you would like more information about being a WSB volunteer, please contact Mr. Ernst. The program is supported by the W.R.D.S.B. and is run by a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers. Get out your walking shoes and stay tuned for more details!

  1. Before and After School Programs

We are pleased that the JK – 2 extended day program provided by the W.R.D.S.B and the grades 3 – 6 before and after school programs provided by the Y.M.C.A. will continue for the 2017/2018 School Year.  The rates for the JK – 2 program will be $10.75 for before school and $14.50 for after school. The rates for the grades 3 – 6 program will be $10.30 for before school and $15.45 for after school. Registration information for both programs can be found at www.wrdsb.ca/beforeafter

  1. Are you moving?

We are already busy preparing for next year.  Accurate enrolment information is key to good planning.  If you are moving and your child will no longer attend Sandhills, please send a note to the school office to let us know the final date of expected attendance at Sandhills and the name of the school you will be transferring to.  You will need to register at the school you will be attending.  Registration forms for schools within the W.R.D.S.B. may be picked up in the office.

  1. Did you know?

Did you know that people who walk and ride their bikes to school are happier?  A study conducted by Green Communities Canada found that students (and the parents who accompanied them) enjoyed a deeper connection to their community, nature and other people.  This connection was found to decrease stress, and to increase happiness.
