  1. Walking School Bus Update

Exciting news about Sandhills Walking School Bus project!

As you may know, a walking school bus is a community based initiative where adult volunteer leaders walk with a group of students from designated checkpoints to their school, a lot like a city bus. This model not only helps students get to school on time without needing to be dropped off by a motor vehicle, but is a great way to be physically active, and build community. Sandhills’ Walking School Bus will launch on Wednesday September 6th – the 2nd day of school. Information about student sign up and routes will be coming soon.

But first, we need volunteers to lead the walking school bus day to day.

We are excited to announce that there will be training offered (free of charge) to all parents and community members who would like to be volunteer walking school bus leaders! The more volunteers we have, the more options we have for viable routes throughout the community, and the more often we can run the walking school bus (i.e. every morning, for every route, all year – is the goal)

Training will take place at Sandhills PS Library June 28th beginning at 6:30pm. The session will be lead by Leslie Maxwell of Student Transportation Services – Waterloo Region using the Canadian Cancer Society’s Trottibus Model. Light refreshments will be provided. If you cannot attend in person at that time there will be an option to dial in and take part remotely. Depending on demand there may also be training in the fall as we hope for continuing interest in the project.

Volunteer leaders will need a Police Record Check including vulnerable sector. Volunteers are encouraged to bring this to training on June 28th to complete the documentation; however, if you don’t have it by then you can always complete registration at a later time. Go to http://www.wrps.on.ca/ or Police Headquarters on Maple Grove Rd. to have your check completed. Cost for volunteers is only $10

This program is only possible with the support of dedicated volunteers like you, so thank you for your support of Sandhills, and your commitment to healthy, safe travel options for students.

  1. Student Transportation 2017/2018

Transportation details for the 2017-2018 school year will be available on Monday August 21, 2017.

Parents can login and view their child’s transportation details by going to www.stswr.ca and following these easy steps:

  • Click on “Student Login”
  • Enter your child’s Ontario Education Number. The OEN can be found on your child’s report card (Numbers only, no space, no dash)
  • Enter your child’s birth date (dd/mm/yyyy)
  • Enter your child’s street number (house number only)
  • Select the school your child is attending from the drop down menu

Please note that any address changes must be done at your child’s school. If you are moving in the summer or changing caregiver arrangements for the fall, you should communicate the change of address to your child’s school before the end of the 2016-2017 school year.

Visit our website at www.stswr.ca to find bus delays and cancellations, subscribe to receive e-mail notifications for late buses and closures and follow us on Twitter @STSWR.

  1. Lost and Found

We have coats, hats, boots, shoes and lunch boxes galore!  The lost and found items are currently on display in the hallway outside the office.  Please stop in or encourage your child(ren) to stop by and look for items that belong to them.  Any items not claimed by the last week of school will be swept off to charity.

  1. School Day Service

Please note that parent access to School-Day will be disabled for the summer.  You will not be able to access School-Day after June 29th, 2017.  Access will resume on September 1st after 4:00pm following a system reset for the new school year.

  1. Library Books

Library book circulation has ended for this school year.  Do you still have books at home?  All books signed out by students MUST be returned by Zero Day which is Friday, June 23rd.

  1. Are you moving?

We are busy preparing for next year.  Accurate enrollment information is key to good planning.  If you are moving and your child will no longer attend Sandhills, please send a note to the school office to let us know the final date of expected attendance at Sandhills and the name of the school you will be transferring to.  You will need to register at the school you will be attending.  Registration forms for schools within the W.R.D.S.B. may be picked up in the office.
